As the co-managing attorney of the firm’s Trusts and Estates Department, Melissa caters her practice to encompass all facets of estate planning, complex trusts, Probate and Administration, Will contests, accountings, Article 81 Guardianships, Elder law, and estate litigation.
Melissa believes the precursor to every successful representation requires an approach embracing an equilibrium of legal expertise and compassion. While preparing for the New York and New Jersey State Bar exams in 2013, Melissa, under the mentorship of several attorneys, advocated on behalf of family in a highly litigated guardianship proceeding while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience in complex, courtroom litigation. Upon admission to both bars Melissa then decided to assist clients in matters similar to that of her own experience, eventually pursuing professional certifications to become a Certified Guardian, Court Evaluator, and Counsel for alleged incapacitated persons in the state of New York as well as an International and Comparative Law Certificate.
Prior to joining our firm, Melissa worked at firms in both New Jersey and New York, focusing on matters relating to trust and estate litigation. In addition, she’s had experience dealing with comity and foreign divorce, contested guardianships, holdover proceedings, real estate transactions and contract law. Early in her career, she won a favorable decision in her representation of a State University student accused under the Federal’s Title IX, Sexual Misconduct law, paving her way as a litigator. Her specific combination of experience in trust and estates and litigation is the reason Melissa was brought onto the Zimmet Law Group Estate Planning department.
Melissa is an active member of the New York and New Jersey State Bar Associations, The International Law committee (N.Y.), Trusts and Estates Law Section (N.Y.), Elder Law and Special Needs Section (N.Y.), Real Property Trust and Estate Law Section (N.J.), and Elder and Disability Law Section (N.J.).
Melissa obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from The George Washington University in 2009. As a student of the University, Melissa studied in Barcelona, interned for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Senatorial Campaign and co-founded Trafficking Free GW, the first student organization focusing on human trafficking advocacy. Melissa received her Juris Doctor from the Florida Coastal School of Law in 2012. Upon graduation of law school, Melissa received the Pro Bono Honors Award as recognition for her commitment to pro bono and public service work.
